Questions to ask before marriage
Discuss where you will live, work, family responsibilities, finances and everyday life before deciding on a rishta.
Where will you live after marriage?
Ask which city and country you would live in. Would you live with family or separately? Discuss privacy, household responsibilities and whether either person would need to move. Say what is certain and what still needs to be decided.
What are your plans for work and study?
Talk about working hours, further study and whether either person expects the other to change jobs. If moving abroad is part of the plan, discuss how work or study could be affected without assuming approval or a job is guaranteed.
How will you manage money and responsibilities?
Discuss household expenses, savings, debts and support for parents or other relatives. Share information gradually and honestly. You do not need to send bank statements or private documents in an early chat.
What matters in everyday life?
Ask about religious practice, children, health matters that affect married life, and how you each handle disagreements. Discuss these respectfully. Avoid turning the first conversation into a long interview.
How will both people make the decision?
Agree on when to involve family and how much time you need. Both people should be able to ask questions and say no without pressure. A conversation or an accepted interest is not a promise of marriage.
These notes are general guidance for families. For a religious ruling, legal advice, or immigration advice, please speak with someone you trust in that field.
